Exploring the Town of Český Krumlov
Welcome to the wonderful and unique town of Český Krumlov! Filled with history, art, and extraordinary corners. Let’s set off to discover its greatest treasures.
Let’s start with the Castle in Český Krumlov (A; GPS: 48.8129994, 14.3144114), which towers over the town. Do you see those majestic towers and colorful frescoes on the facade? The castle is the second-largest castle complex in the Czech Republic. Let’s cross the bridge over the moat (B; GPS: 48.812777921, 14.31583779) – notice that there’s no water in it, but… bears! This tradition dates back to the 17th century.
Now let’s enter the castle courtyard. Take a moment to look at the castle tower. If you’re up for it, you can climb to its top to enjoy a spectacular view of the town's red rooftops and the surrounding hills.
Next, let’s walk through the castle garden (C; GPS: 48.81121422, 14.3089623) – a place full of harmony. Stroll along its paths and take in the fountains, sculptures, and the view of the castle theater. It’s the only functioning Baroque theater in Europe with its original equipment!
We’re now heading down to the town center. On the way, we pass Švejk Restaurant (D; GPS: 48.8120117, 14.31641018). Everyone knows Švejk! If you’re hungry, this is a great spot for a delicious meal (open from 11:30).
Let’s continue towards the banks of the Vltava River. Notice the picturesque bends of the river and the colorful houses reflecting in the water. It’s a perfect spot for photos! If you feel like it, you can rent a boat or try rafting.
Crossing the bridge over the Vltava, we arrive at the Marionette Museum (E; GPS: 48.811380437, 14.315177874). Step inside to enter the world of puppet theater. You’ll see a unique collection of marionettes and stage designs and learn about the history of this art form in the Czech Republic. It’s a fantastic place for both kids and adults.
We reach the main square – Náměstí Svornosti (F; GPS: 48.81068864, 14.314904469). Take a look around. Each building here has its own story. In the center of the square stands the 18th-century Plague Column, erected to commemorate the end of the plague epidemic. This is a great spot to take a break, have some coffee, or enjoy a traditional Czech pastry – trdelník.
Finally, let’s visit the Egon Schiele Art Center (G; GPS: 48.81086082, 14.31339756). This place is dedicated to one of the most famous Austrian artists. In addition to Schiele’s works, you’ll also find exhibitions of contemporary art here.
On the way back, we visit the Minorite Monastery (H; GPS: 48.8128376, 14.3184742). This is a unique place that combines spiritual tranquility with history. Walking through the courtyards and interiors of the monastery, we can admire beautiful frescoes and Gothic architecture. It’s also worth visiting the medieval craft exhibition, which takes us back in time.
To conclude, let’s head to the Krumlov Brewery (I; GPS: 48.8129269, 14.3200268). This historic brewery has been operating in Český Krumlov since the 16th century. You can see how traditional Czech beer is brewed and, at the end, taste various kinds in the brewery’s restaurant. It’s a perfect spot to relax after an eventful day.
