Italy

In Italy, just like in France, an extensive network of toll roads exists. In addition to the highways connecting major cities there are bypass highway roads (Tangenziale), and less expensive, highway connections (Raccordo Autostradale and Diramazione) that allow more comfortable journey. The connections have the status of a motorway or similar road. In addition, there are also expressways (Strada Extraurbana Principale or Superstrada), which are free of charge.

The speed limit for cars on motorways is typically 130 km/h. If the highway has three lanes in each direction, and uses the speed electronic control system (Safety Tutor), then the speed limit can be increased to 150 km/h (placing the respective road signs is required in order to inform the driver about increased speed limit).

Speed limit for cars on expressways is 110 km/h.

As mentioned above, the Italian motorways are paid. There is a ticketing system used for these fees. At the entrance to a specific section of the highway you take the ticket, which is then the basis for the payment at the point, which is located at the end of a section of highway or at the highway's exit. At the entrance to the highway you should avoid charging lanes marked in yellow because they are reserved for customers using automatic system called TELEPASS. These lanes are usually located on the left side. You can use blue (charging available with the credit cards) and white (automatic charging with cards and cash; charging involving the operator) lanes. The following table shows the types of information boards located above mentioned lanes at the entrance to the highway, respectively, from left to right.

Accomodation

Depending on the length of your stay, you can rent a room in a hotel or the whole apartment. In addition, you can also rent a holiday home or room in a real hacienda, located away from the hustle and bustle of big cities.

On the Internet you can find many sites that allow you to search for interesting types of property and to determine their geographic location. Here are some of them: LateRooms.com, Interhome, Tourist-Online.de, TuscanyRent, HostelWorld, Booking.com and Hotel.de. There are many offers, so you can unhurriedly view and compare the prices and services for each of the sites.

Various tips

A good practice is to refuel before entering Italy - the fuel prices in this country are very high.

Depending on the length of the route you should consider an extra overnight. In this way you can get to your destination much more refreshed. Of course, if you are able to ride 1500 kilometers in one day or you have a second driver "on board", you can get to the destination point on the same day. In this case however, take into account the fact that the trip will have to begin very early in the morning to be at the destination in the "normal" time. Property owners often define the exact time of arrival. If you estimate that your travel time is going to be extended, be sure to contact the owner and inform him of the situation.
